Room to Read

Room to Read is supporting Literacy and Girls’ Education in one of the most impoverished areas of Sri Lanka

How can you help?

In Sri Lanka, INTO Giving is supporting more than three dozen 11-17-year old girls – and gender equality – with a donations totalling £15,000 (US $19,300) over 2017-2019.

In partnership with Room to Read, we’re providing material support (for example school uniforms, tuition and exam fees) and help pairing girls with strong women in the community who encourage their educational and personal development.

In many parts of Sri Lanka, girls face discrimination and barriers to education. This is particularly true in the central highlands area (known for its Ceylon tea), where the project specialises in helping girls who often work long hours, for low wages, which prevents them from attending school and doing homework, producing a literacy gap.

It makes you think, it makes you ask yourself: what if this wasn't someone halfway around the world, but my sister, my mother, my daughter, my partner or my friend, wouldn’t I stick up for them?

It’s important, also, because Sri Lanka is still recovering from a twenty-six year civil war (1983 -2009) that killed more than 60,000 Sri Lankans and devastated the country's infrastructure.

Thirty-nine young girls are receiving help to stay in school and make the most out of school (and again you ask yourself, what if this was my friend, my partner, my daughter) through four areas of education:

Life-skills: Life-skills are competencies such as self-efficiency and empathy, and lessons in health and hygiene, overcoming and dealing with gender bias, making time to study and goal-setting.

Mentoring: Strong, educated local women serve as role models, advisors, and advocates to schoolgirls enrolled on the programme, providing girls with emotional support and guidance.

Material Support: The cost of a school uniform or safe transportation is prohibitive for some families. We're providing need-based material support for school costs such as tuition fees, uniforms, and exam preparation services so parents don't have to make the choice between putting food on the table and investing in education.

Community Engagement: INTO Giving' is also helping create environments that support girls' success in school and beyond, through community meetings where parents and caretakers can discuss the importance of sending all of their children to school, and also the challenges they are facing
