The Mercy Preschool in the Khlong Toey Slum, Bangkok is for children aged 3-7. It aims to instil confidence in their learning from a young age, giving them a head start before they start main stream schooling.

Many of the children here are malnourished. The school also ensures that hot nutritious meals are provided daily and they track the children’s height and weight. The school also acts as a form of childcare, giving their parents the security to go to work and earn a living to support their families.

Three months ago in January, the Khlong Toey slum sadly experienced a devastating fire. With the houses being wooden and close together the fire spread quickly and destroyed block upon block of homes and local businesses.

INTO Giving organised an emergency appeal and raised over £500 in a week to help rebuild the community.

Today we have an update. New homes are now being built; these are steel framed and stronger and safer than the previous homes. The community has bound together, everyone is participating, and everyone benefits.

Local mothers are in charge of collecting donations and take it in turns with other parents to serve food.

Other parents guard the building sites and help with construction to keep to labor costs low. Mercy Preschool teachers come each morning to collect the children for school, forty one children and their families have now moved into their new homes.

This week is the 45th anniversary of the Mercy Centre and they are planning a celebration this weekend, showing how their spirit was not burnt down with the houses. They’ve also had time to celebrate children graduating from Mercy showing how education continues despite the tragedy

It is wonderful to see a community pulling together to rebuild themselves from such devastating circumstances and also wonderful that the empathy for this crosses oceans to other communities who want to help by donating.

Thank you to everyone who donated to help the rebuilding of this community and to INTO Giving in general. It is you who ensure vital projects such as these remain open

Much Love INTO Giving Xx
