INTO Exeter cooks up a storm to support their local community!

Thanks to the TWO paid volunteering days each INTO employee receives, Karen has been able to share her love of baking!

Volunteering at St Sidwell’s Community Centre

07 May 2019

Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th April 2019.  Volunteering at St Sidwell’s Community Centre, Exeter.

"I was put to work in the kitchen and café alongside the other volunteers.  These are mostly young people with SpLD, eg autism, and refuge or asylum seekers.  They spend one or two days a week learning about food hygiene and preparation, learning how to cook, and interacting with the public by serving in the café and using the till.  I met an interesting variety of people during the two days I was there.

My ‘duties’ included assisting the kitchen manager in ‘overseeing’ some of these young people and in the preparation and production of the food served in the café.  Everything served in Sid’s Café is freshly prepared and cooked on site from produce mostly donated from local businesses.   Everything is sold at affordable prices.

I was in my element!  To spend my two volunteering days in an environment where I could carry out my passion for baking in addition to giving back to the community was fantastic!  I baked several cakes including 2 banana & walnut loaves, an orange drizzle cake, an apple and blueberry crumble.  I also learned the basics of bread-making – that is not me in the photo’!  The centre has recently started baking its own bread, which is delicious (and I have a loaf in my freezer!)

I have asked to go back next year." - Karen Kennedy, Teacher, English Language, INTO Exeter
