Jusoor School, Beirut

INTO Giving supports Syrian refugee schoolchildren through completely renovating a school and paying for a school counselor providing mental health support.

How can you help?

INTO Giving is supporting Syrian refugee schoolchildren and teachers at the Jusoor School in Beirut, Lebanon with £30,000 (US $38,500) over 2016-20.

More than 320 children attend Jusoor School everyday. These children range from age 6 to 17-years-old, but most are aged just 6 to 8-years-old.

In 2016, INTO Giving completely renovated a new school building – its seven classrooms, computer lab, six bathrooms, kitchen, hallways, stairwells and walls, electricity, water, and the 300 metre playground - enabling the school to move from its old and small premises, to the new one, which opened in autumn 2016.

IN 2017-18, we supported the costs of a school counsellor providing mental health support to the school's children, their parents and teachers (many of the teachers are themselves Syrian refugees).

Heading into 2019 the funds will continue to help with essential teacher costs, to ensure these children receive a top quality education.

Children at Jusoor will have lost everything - homes, family members, friends, pets, the buoyancy and sunny brilliance of childhood -  in their country's civil war, and be in very real and immediate need of mental health help. They exhibit a range of mental health issues, including anxiety (and anxiety manifesting in muteness), depression, low self-esteem, even wetting and soiling oneself.

Remember these are ordinary children. Children who liked cartoons, who liked climbing trees and games of hide and seek. Children like you know now, and children like you once were.

More than one million schoolchildren have fled from the Syrian Civil War to Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq.

Although 500,000 Syrian refugee children in Lebanon are school-aged, most – 310,000, in fact – are not in school. For these children, school provides not just education, but some sense of normality, support and hope.

The sounds you hear at the Jusoor School are familiar  in classrooms around the world. Laughter. Play. Quiet study. Teachers instructing classes. Children reading aloud. Normality is resumed for a few hours as a child repeats a story, another asks a question, another shifts in their seat as they quietly take it all in.

Life and learning closer to where it should be, thanks to you. Your donations are doing wonders.
