Bees Abroad

Eradicating poverty and supporting schoolchildren's education through beekeeping

How can you help?

With more than £10,000 (US $13,000) of donations over 2017-2020, INTO Giving is supporting secondary schoolchildren’s environmental education and vocational training through Bees Abroad Nigeria.

Bees Abroad is a global programme that at once helps alleviate poverty through beekeeping, and helps protect – even strengthen – the environment. Helping schoolchildren out of poverty is particularly important in Nigeria, one of the world’s poorest countries, where two-out-of-every-three people live in poverty.

INTO Giving’s support helps students at the Multilateral Grammar School in the Odogbolu district. At the school, 90% of students come from poor farming families. Poverty here means going to school in the morning hungry and going to bed hungry, high mortality rates and scarce access to healthcare.

All of the 10 students enrolled on the inaugural beekeeping course (for which there was a long waiting list), all are between 14-18-years-old, and four of the students are girls.

INTO Giving’s support pays for:

  • Delivery of beekeeping training, including teacher training
  • Hive construction materials and personal protection equipment
  • Training materials and manuals
  • Honey harvesting equipment

Beekeeping students can take their skills outside of school, into their community, thus creating a second income which will help to pay their school fees and support their families. Beekeeping at the school also provides an income stream for the school itself, to buy in extra resources.

It’s not just honey! Beekeeping also produces a range of other products, including candles, creams, salves, polishes and waterproofing.

Bees Abroad Nigeria ensures the protection of bee colonies. You may ask why that’s important (and why it’s important in Nigeria). The answer is straightforward: one-third of food is pollination dependent, thus more healthy bees help ensure more local food.

Bee colonies are in sharp decline due to global warming and increased use of pesticides. There is an urgent need to stop chemical-intensive industrial agriculture and to shift towards ecological farming. Ecological farming ensures healthy farming and healthy food for today and tomorrow by protecting soil, water and climate, and promotes biodiversity.

When you support INTO Giving, you’re helping schoolchildren learn an essential skill – essential to them as individuals, to their school, to their community and to their families.

$5 or £5 can help a schoolchild as they chase down their dreams.

And for having a big heart like you do, remember this: you’re the bee’s knees!
