How can you help? With a grants totaling of £15,000 ($16,870 US) between 2020 and today, INTO Giving is helping Children on the Edge support 270 Syrian refugee schoolchildren, all 7-14-years-old (of whom 45% are girls) who have fled their country’s civil war, to Zahle, Lebanon.
Children on the Edge's work with Syrian refugees centres on schooling for 270 children aged 7-14-years-old at a school in Zahle (Lebanon’s 3rd largest city). Subjects taught include maths, science Arabic, English, French, history.
All classes are taught by qualified teachers and operate in line with Children on the Edge's child safeguarding policy and procedures.
45% of the 270 students are girls. Many have never been educated or received only informal schooling.
Working with local partner Triumphant Mercy, families are encouraged to keep their daughters in school as they grow older. This includes direct interventions, literacy and skills training for parents and a girls' summer class to raise confidence and aspirations in older girls.
Teachers use Montessori techniques to help children engage in Arabic, English, maths, science, history and geography.
Children follow a Syrian and Lebanese child friendly curriculum in their own dialect, and also receive vocational training and trauma care.
